During the heat of the Ontario summer months, our monthly electric bills can really skyrocket, especially if you have an out-of-date air conditioner. Older AC units tend to use up more energy and more money to run than a newer model, and this is because they’re often less energy-efficient and need more overall maintenance. But what makes an air conditioner energy efficient? How will a high-efficiency air conditioner benefit your home and your pocketbook? At Delta, we’re all about finding the right AC for you and your family, so here are a few tips!
What Is A High-Efficiency Air Conditioner?
Basically, A high-efficiency air conditioner is an AC unit that has a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of over thirteen. Contrary to popular belief, to find the SEER of an air conditioner, manufacturers don’t simply calculate the watt usage of the system. To calculate a unit’s SEER rating, the cooling output of a typical summer season is divided by the total electricity used in that same period, giving a specific and accurate number.
Fortunately, the manufacturers will do the math for you so you don’t have to measure throughout the summer yourself. You can see your air conditioner’s SEER rating and determine if your unit is high-efficiency by a yellow sticker that is often placed on the side. SEER ratings can go up to 25 with 13 and above being the general rule for a high-efficiency, with most new AC units ranging from 13 to 21.
How Will A High-Efficiency Air Conditioner Benefit Me?
Upgrading your older air conditioning system to something newer and more efficient is the responsible choice both environmentally and financially. When your home has a high-efficiency air conditioner, you will be using less energy for cooling operation, costing you less month-over-month in utilities. When you make smart decisions about your home and its efficiency, it always pays off.
