It’s important to schedule professional air conditioner maintenance every year. Sometimes we come across homeowners who think they can inspect and tune-up their own system, but we strongly advise against homeowners tackling maintenance tasks beyond a simple filter change or clearing debris from the condenser.
To ensure that an AC is operating safely and at maximum efficiency—a number of checks and adjustments are made inside the system. It takes years of training to gain the expertise and knowledge required to safely perform professional air conditioner maintenance. One mistake could cause irreparable harm or even personal injury. Additionally, there are many specialized tools required to properly service an air conditioner and many homeowners don’t have access to the right equipment.
If your cooling system is still under manufacturer warranty—annual professional air conditioner maintenance is usually a requirement to keep the warranty valid. Repairs and service performed by a non-professional can also invalidate the warranty.
In addition to scheduling yearly professional maintenance, there are a few things that homeowners can undertake to keep their AC operating efficiently:
- Check and change filters regularly. A clogged filter can cause a number of problems with the air conditioner so it should be checked monthly and replaced as needed. If you’re unsure how to change the filter, you can ask the technician to show you during the maintenance appointment.
- Clear the condenser. It’s important that the outdoor unit is clear of debris and that there’s sufficient room for airflow. Periodically check that leaves or branches haven’t collected around the condenser—especially after a spring or summer storm.
It’s important to have yearly AC maintenance, just make sure that you let a professional do the work.
