If you have a whole-home humidifier like the one pictured here, you know how helpful it can be to your home comfort and even your health. First off, we called it a filter because everyone seems to refer to it that way. It’s really a pad. It’s designed to provide plenty of surface area for water as air blows over it. This helps maximize the evaporation process and increases the humidity in the air.
The Importance of Changing Your Humidifier Filter
Humidifiers are a great way to combat the dry air that results from using a furnace during the colder months of the year. Changing your humidifier’s pad is extremely important in ensuring your getting the most evaporation when you need it. Typically the pad will scale up from minerals in the water and the media will corrode. This both inhibits evaporation performance and introduces airborne materials we don’t want.
How Often Should You Change Your Whole-Home Humidifier Filter
For the healthiest results for both your home’s air quality and your own comfort, you should be changing your humidifier’s filter once per season. It’s recommended that they be changed at the start of the heating season so that any scale, corrosion or mold and mildew collected in the spring/summer months isn’t dispersed into your home. Keep in mind you should never attempt to clean humidifier pads because they have a cellulose layer, which allows water to bead, and cleaning them by hand removes this layer.
