You probably know by now that annual maintenance is crucial to the efficiency and proper functioning of your heat pump. At a minimum, you should have a professional HVAC technician service your heat pump once a year. Still, you want to stay on top of the cleaning and maintenance of your system during the winter. In fact, winter is the best time for heat pump maintenance because that’s when you’re using it most heavily.
Maintenance and Cleaning
In addition to having your heat pump serviced each year, you need to keep your heat pump system clean. This includes cleaning both the indoor and outdoor units. Regular maintenance like this is protecting your investment as it will keep your heat pump running efficiently and increase its lifespan.
Measure Efficiency
Every heat pump has an HSPF = Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. This is a rating system used to measure how well your heat pump performs when in heating mode. A higher score equates to a heat pump that operates more efficiently. It’s worth it to spend more money on a more efficient heat pump as it’ll heat your home better and more efficiently. This, paired with proper maintenance, will keep your heat pump functioning efficiently.
Prepare a Backup
While there are cold climate heat pumps, it’s best to have a backup for those extra cold Canadian winter days. Whether it’s electric baseboard heating or a gas furnace, a backup source of heat will help your heat pump run more efficiently and ensure your comfort during extreme weather events.
Snow Removal
Many homeowners make the mistake of failing to clear the snow around their heat pump. As the snow falls, it’s important to keep the outdoor unit of your heat pump clear. This involves removing the snow around the unit regularly so that your heat pump runs smoothly and efficiently. So, after a big snowfall, check the outdoor unit and clear away any accumulated snow to prevent blockages. If you notice ice building up on your heat pump, gently pour warm water over it to melt the ice.
Protect Your Investment
Your heat pump works its hardest during the winter months. Carrying out this maintenance consistently throughout the winter helps you protect your investment. It’ll improve the efficiency and lifespan of your heat pump so you get the most out of it.
