To keep the cool air flowing throughout your house, make sure to call for AC service before a complete breakdown. If you notice any of the following signs, you’ll want to schedule an appointment with a certified technician as soon as possible.
AC Blowing Hot Air
If the air conditioner is operating but not blowing cold air, you’ll need AC service right away. A cooling system that’s blowing hot air could be a sign of a broken compressor or a refrigerant leak. Both issues need the expert attention of a knowledgeable air conditioner technician.
Moisture Around System from a Leak
If you have a slow leak, your air conditioner might still be generating cool air, but you’ll likely notice moisture around the system. A refrigerant leak is serious and needs to be addressed right away. If you have a newer air conditioner, a tech can repair the leak and top up your refrigerant; however, if you have an older system that uses R22, be aware it’s being phased out and you might need to upgrade your system.
New Sounds During Operation
An air conditioner should be fairly quiet during operation. If you begin to notice sounds—like a thud or clunk—when it’s in use, that’s a sign a component has worn down or come loose. Continuing to run the cooling system could lead to a complete system breakdown, so it’s advisable to call for AC service as soon as possible.
Unusual Smells
When first turning on your air conditioner at the beginning of the season, you might notice a smell as settled dust is disturbed, but this late in the season there is no reason your AC system should be emitting any smells. If there are any odours associated with the air conditioner, we recommend turning off the unit and calling for AC service so a tech can investigate and diagnose the issue.
