Around this time of year, as the temperature begins to rise and homeowners across the province anxiously await all of the fun activities that come with summer, we often get asked when the best time to turn on the air conditioning is. While no one specific date is considered to be the best time to turn on your air conditioning, there are a few suggestions we can offer to help guide you to the right answer for your home.
When Should You Turn On Your Air Conditioner?
The temperature outside begins to rise and reach consistently high levels at different times each year, which is why it’s difficult for us to provide an exact date and time to turn on your air conditioning. We usually say by the May 24th long-weekend to give homeowners a rough idea of when they should be ready to start using their cooling system, but it really comes down to keeping an eye on the average daily temperatures.
Once the temperature outside is consistently rising above 20° Celsius, that’s when we suggest that homeowners begin to use their cooling systems. There are usually a few days in April and May where the temperature rises above 20°C, but once early June rolls around, you will start to see the temperature consistently rising above that. Those temperature trends are why we use Victoria Day weekend as our rough estimate for the best time to turn on your air conditioning. Ultimately, it’s really up to you when you want to start using your air conditioner, but if your home feels unseasonably warm, don’t hesitate to turn your cooling system on because no rule states once you start using it you have to use it every day.
Plan Ahead
While you may not start using your cooling system until sometime in May or June, the best time to turn your air conditioning on for the first time isn’t once the temperature is uncomfortably warm. It’s a good idea to fire up your air conditioner on the first 20°C day to ensure that everything is running properly before the extreme heat arrives. You should also book your annual cooling system maintenance around this time so that you know your cooling system is running efficiently and can get you through the extra hot months ahead.
