Indoor air quality is something that can easily be overlooked by homeowners, but it’s essential for maintaining a comfortable and healthy home. With allergy season upon us, it’s even more important to know the best ways to remove pollen and other contaminants from the air inside your home.
A Growing Problem
Recent studies from Aerobiology Research Laboratories show that allergy season is getting even longer in Canada for certain types of pollen. For example, birch pollen season has increased by 60 days between 2006 and 2017. Now more than ever, it’s important to make sure indoor air quality is at a high level.
Ways to Remove Pollen
1. Change Air Filters: One of the most effective ways to remove pollen from the home is to regularly change the air filters in your HVAC system. Air filters can help prevent pollen from getting trapped in the air conditioning system, reducing the number of particles circulating through your home’s ductwork. High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters and filters with high Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) ratings are best for alleviating pollen allergies in the home. But be warned that not all systems are designed for HEPA filters.

2. Clean Often: Maintaining a clean living environment is a great way to reduce allergens in the home. You should get in the habit of vacuuming on a regular basis, ideally with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter for trapping harmful particles and air pollutants. While your HVAC air filters eliminate airborne allergens, frequent vacuuming is needed to remove the pollen that has settled on the floors and furniture. Mopping and wiping down surfaces after vacuuming will also make a big difference in reducing the allergens in your home.
3. Close Windows: Although it may be tempting to crack a window open in the spring and summer to let in fresh air, doing so will allow pollen to enter your home and negatively impact air quality. Be smart about when you open windows and make an effort to keep them closed on windy days.

We can’t stress enough how important indoor air quality is. Your HVAC system is the most effective way to protect against indoor allergens, so it’s crucial to keep it properly maintained and functioning the way it’s supposed to.
