Summer is quickly approaching and the sun is finally warming up the earth to bring plants, trees and other vegetation back to life. Unfortunately for allergy sufferers, this includes a steady increase of pollen in the air and the blooming of ragweed and more all over southern Ontario. As people who experience the woes of allergy season will tell you, there are a few things you can do around your home in the next few weeks to prepare and try to lessen the impact allergies will have on your life this spring.
• Remove Clutter
If you haven’t committed to a deep spring cleaning yet, try to get it done as soon as possible. Clutter not only takes up space you could be using in your home, it can also become a dust trap and a place you’ll have to frequently clean during allergy season.
• Dust and Vacuum Thoroughly
Dust, vacuum, mop and wipe down all surfaces to remove as much dust as possible from your home. As part of your spring cleaning, you should deep clean all carpets, rugs and upholstery, too. This will help to remove lingering dust, dust mites, pet hair and other air pollutants within your home.
• Change and Launder Frequently
Pollen is everywhere this time of year and will stick to you and your clothing. If you’re out enjoying the warm weather, keep allergens out of your home by changing as soon as you get in. Don’t forget to wash your clothes, bedding and towels frequently to reduce pollen spreading indoors.
• Mould Check
Did you know that allergies can often stem from mold and mildew spores within your home? Leaking faucets and moisture trapped under tiles or other flooring can lead to mould growth, which in turn leads to allergy symptoms and even risks of illness! Fix all leaks at home as soon as possible and check for mould if you suspect any trapped moisture.
• Clean Your HVAC System
Your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is the highway for air in your home. You should be changing your air filter according to your system’s manufacturer specifications to ensure that the air blowing throughout your home is clean during allergy season.
If your system hasn’t been properly and professionally cleaned yet this year, it’ll push dust and other pollutants along with the air through your ducts and into each room of your house.
