HRVs (Heat Recovery Ventilators) and ERVs (Energy Recovery Ventilators) have become a staple in many Canadian homes. They work to pull in fresh air to your house to improve your overall home air quality. A heat exchanger is used to limit the amount of energy (and money) that is wasted in the process. Performing HRV or ERV maintenance results in better indoor air quality, a healthier home, and very little loss in energy. A system that does all that is worth maintaining. Here are a few tips:
Turn Off Your HRV / ERV
Safety First. Make sure the power to the unit is off. It’s important to understand that only certain maintenance can be performed by a regular homeowner, anything more advanced than the next couple of steps should be reserved for the experts.
Clean Or Replace The Filter
If your air filter becomes clogged, this will reduce your HRV’s power and efficiency. One of the easiest ways to conduct HRV maintenance at home is to tend to your HRV’s filter once every 60 days. If accessible by the homeowner, changing or cleaning the HRV’s filter should only take a few moments. With most new HRV systems, you simply need to take out the filter and dust it clean, then put it back into the system; with old HRV systems, you may need to replace the filter entirely with another disposable filter.
Inspect Outdoor Exhaust And Intake Vents
An HRV’s job is to use its outdoor intake vents to bring fresh air into your home. If these vents are blocked by the natural debris of your yard, your air quality may diminish along with your HRV’s efficiency. Make sure to periodically check the outdoor vents to make sure they aren’t clogged with snow, leaves, grass, branches, or any other type of natural debris.
