Home renovations can be an exciting experience for homeowners because it’s the first step towards creating the house of their dreams, but it can be a stressful time as well. Follow these steps to protect your home comfort systems during your renovation and make sure your project gets completed without any surprises.
The biggest threat to your home comfort system during a renovation is dust and debris. During any renovation process, a lot of debris will become airborne, which can be unsightly and irritating, but it could also be damaging your heating and cooling systems in ways that you can’t see, so you’ll want to take the following precautions;
Protect Vents
We recommend turning off your HVAC forced air system, closing your registers and vents and covering them prior to your renovation starting. This will keep any debris from settling in your ductwork and reaching your home comfort systems for the duration of your renovation.
Keep It Off
Running your HVAC forced air system while the vents are blocked can do damage to the system. Obviously, during longer renovations this could be tricky, but it will go a long way towards protecting your equipment. Keeping the systems off will keep any dust and debris from making their way into your heating and cooling system, and it’s also necessary if the vents are closed.
If you do run the system during a renovation, keep a close eye on the build up in the filtration system and change or clean as needed.
Change Filter
Once the renovation process is complete, the easiest way to ensure your home comfort system is protected is to replace your air filter. Even after the project is finished, there will likely be more dust and debris than usual in your household air for a brief period, so it’s a good idea to check your filters frequently for a few months afterwards.
Keep it Clean
Your contractor will likely help you with this step, but try to keep your home as clean as possible during the renovation process to minimize the impact on your home comfort systems and household air. A quick vacuum and dusting each day can go a long way towards protecting your equipment.
With just a little bit of time and effort, you can ensure your home comfort systems are protected during your renovation process and come out the other side ready to keep your newly renovated home comfortable. That being said, if you’re looking for extra protection, our protection plans can keep your heating and cooling systems running at their best all year long.
