Delta Air Systems is your area expert on air source heat pumps (ASHP). With the current GreenON rebates, many area homeowners have called us with questions about this type of heating and cooling system—and we’ve had the opportunity to educate many people about ASHP benefits.
Ducted or Ductless Air Source Heat Pump?
One of the questions we get most often about the system is the difference between a ducted and ductless ASHP and which option is best for homeowners. To help clear up any confusion, it’s important to point out that both ducted and ductless ASHPs use the same mechanics to produce warmed (or cooled) air—the difference is in the components involved and how the air is distributed throughout the home.
In a ducted system, the refrigerant travels from an outdoor unit to an indoor coil that’s usually found in the mechanical room. The warmed (or cooled) air is then distributed throughout the home through existing (or new) ductwork. This is a popular option for homeowners that previously used a forced air system and want to reuse that ductwork with their new ASHP.
A ductless air source heat pump also uses an outdoor unit, indoor unit and refrigerant—but the components are a bit different. Refrigerant travels from a smaller outdoor unit to an indoor unit that is mounted on the wall—not in a mechanical room—that includes a fan to circulate air. In this system, the coil is inside the mounted unit and conditioned air is directly distributed to the room. Multiple indoor units can be installed throughout the home to provide zoned heating and cooling.
Both ducted and ductless air source heat pumps are eligible for GreenON rebates and can help lower your monthly heating and cooling bills. If you’re interested in learning how an ASHP can benefit your family—don’t hesitate to contact us.
