There are a number of different air filter options available. Each has their own benefits, and it’s important to choose the right filter for your needs and your heating and cooling system. Not all filters are compatible with all systems so it’s important to consult an expert before changing to a different style of filter.
Standard Filters: The most common types of air filters available due to the fact that they are both disposable and affordable. Standard filters are made of fiberglass and can trap larger airborne particles, but aren’t the most efficient and should be replaced monthly during peak heating and cooling seasons.
Pleated Filter: These filters are made from polyester or cotton that have been folded into pleats. This increases the surface area allowing more airborne allergens, dust and mold to be trapped. Pleated filters are also a very popular choice among homeowners, as they last longer and are more robust than standard fiberglass filters.
Electrostatic Filter: Unlike the first two options, these filters are washable and permanent. Electrostatic filters clean the air by using electrostatically charged fibers that attract and trap airborne particles. While they are usually more expensive, washability makes them an attractive option. A downside is they load up easily and quickly and can quickly reduce the airflow to your system.
HEPA Filters: HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters eliminate up to 99% of airborne contaminants and pollutants, which means they are the best at maintaining optimal indoor air quality. These near hospital grade filters are ideal in environments that require excellent air quality. Generally, these filters have a seperate motor with a bypass duct system to prevent air flow losses in your existing system.
The performance of your home comfort system depends on a clean and properly functioning AC filter. It’s important to choose one that fits your specific needs and is also compatible with your heating and cooling system.
