Every year during the first few heat waves, we get a ton of calls from homeowners who experience issues with their air conditioner not starting when they try to turn it on for the first time. Although we’re always happy to help, we’ve listed a few things below you can check before arranging a service call:
Thermostat
Ensure your thermostat is on and set to the “Cool” or “AC” mode. If the display is blank, you may need to replace the batteries in the thermostat entirely. It is also important to remember that the air conditioner will not be starting if the “Cool” temperature setting is higher than the indoor temperature.
Outdoor Unit
Go outside to your condensing unit and make sure the cover is removed and all debris is cleared away from the system, also be sure to confirm that the outdoor electrical disconnect is in the “ON” position. Finally, it’s important to make sure there are no obvious signs of damage to the wires and lines leading from the house into the unit.
Electrical Breaker
When you check your electrical panel, your AC Breaker should be clearly marked. Make sure that it is firmly in the ON position.
Now try running the unit! While it is running, make sure there’s no water leaking from your furnace, the outdoor unit sounds normal, and that the air coming from the vents in the house is cool. If something seems off, or your air conditioner just simply is not starting, it’s time to call a professional.
Keep in mind that although these are common issues and solutions, the problems with your air conditioner could be due to something more serious. So, if you try all of these troubleshooting solutions and you are still experiencing problems with your air conditioner not starting, be sure to contact your HVAC service provider.
