If you notice any air conditioner leaks, the first course of action is to turn off your unit to prevent further damage to your home and to avoid a safety hazard. Next, call your local heating and cooling specialists to diagnose and fix the problem.
Clogged Condensate Drain Line
One of the most common reasons an air conditioner leaks is because of a clogged condensate drain line. Condensation from the evaporator coil is emptied outside through the condensate drain. This line can become clogged—usually by algae—and can cause water to backup into your home.
Annual air conditioner maintenance can help prevent clogged condensate drains, but if you find that you’re facing a blocked line, a reputable HVAC company will have the necessary tools to clear the line and inspect the unit to ensure no damage occurred.
Broken Condensate Pump
In many homes in the area, the evaporator coil is located in the basement and the condensate needs to be emptied outside—above the basement. To propel the water up, a condensate pump is used. If the pump breaks, the water in the condensate drain can’t be forced up and out—leaving a mess of water on the floors.
A certified HVAC technician will be able to determine if the broken condensate pump can be repaired or if it has to be completely replaced.
Low Refrigerant
Low refrigerant can create air conditioner leaks by lowering the pressure in the air conditioning system and causing the evaporator coil to freeze over. The water on your floor may be from the melted ice that overflows the drain pan. If you notice that the AC isn’t cooling your home well or hear a hissing noise coming from your system—you’re most likely low on refrigerant.
It’s extremely important to call a certified professional to handle anything refrigerant-related. There are strict laws regarding the handling of cooling compounds and if misused, they could pose a serious safety hazard.
Air conditioner leaks need to be inspected as soon as you notice them to avoid expensive AC repair bills later.
