As the summer sun heats up, so can your air conditioning costs. It can feel like a constant battle against the heat while trying to keep cooling costs in check. This summer, try out some of these simple strategies to save on air conditioning costs.
1. Adjust the thermostat.
Every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer can save you up to 3% on your cooling costs. Ideally, aim to set it around 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 degrees Celsius) when you’re home and bump it up a few degrees when you’re sleeping or away.
*Upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat can improve energy efficiency and cut costs even more.
2. Use your ceiling fans strategically.
Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise. This helps circulate the cool air around your house. Plus, the circulation can create a windchill effect, making you feel cooler without lowering the thermostat.
3. Service your air conditioner.
One of the most important ways to keep your home cool and save money on cooling costs is to stay up to date on air conditioning maintenance. This means having your unit serviced at least once a year. Signing up for a Protection Plan is the best way to stay on top of this.
4. Seal leaks and insulate.
Drafty windows, doors, and around vents can allow cool air to escape and hot air to enter. Seal up these areas to prevent air leaks. On top of that, install weather stripping around windows and doors and add insulation where needed.
5. Unplug devices not in use.
Electrical devices and appliances can generate a fair amount of heat and consume energy, even when not in use. Unplug any devices that aren’t being used.
6. Add shade by landscaping wisely.
If possible, strategically plan your landscaping to increase natural shade over your house. This may involve planting trees and shrubs around your house.
7. Use blinds, curtains, or invest in window treatments.
Keep the hot sun out by closing blinds and curtains during the day. You might also consider investing in window treatments
8. Change air filters as recommended.
Dirty air filters restrict airflow and make your AC work harder. This will result in higher energy consumption, and therefore, higher bills. Help your cooling system work more efficiently and effectively by changing the filter as recommended (every 1-3 months depending on the type).
9. Pay attention to peak and off-peak hours.
If your utility company offers off-peak electricity rates, try to run your AC – as well as the bulk of your appliances – during those times. Limit electricity consumption during peak hours.
10. Invest in high-efficiency equipment.
When you replace your HVAC system, and household appliances, invest in high-efficiency equipment. Look for the Energy Star label when replacing appliances and talk to us about SEER ratings when purchasing new HVAC units. The higher initial cost will be offset by the energy savings in the long term.
